Who is affected by Insomnia?

All age groups and genders are susceptible to insomnia at some point in their life, and other sleep disorders, but it is definitely more common in older adults and women.  Recent studies show that as people age there melatonin production slows down which in turn effects their sleeping patterns- which is why as people age they have trouble sleeping.

Melatonin is produced by the pineal gland in the brain and contributes to the wake- sleep cycle of the body.  Studies also show that women are more prone to insomnia due to hormone fluctuations or imbalances that often disturb sleep patterns- such as pregnancy or during menstrual cycle.  Menopause insomnia or perimenopause insomnia are also very common and there are proven solutions out there for this kind of insomnia that we have listed below under the herbal remedies category. Insomnia in children is not as common and is usually due to going to bed late, nutrition deficiencies, or poor sleeping habits.  The frequency and severity of insomnia often increases with age.  It affects nearly 40% of women and 30% of men with 60 million total people affected by insomnia in the United States a year.
